Unions support Jingye/British Steel deal, but don't endorse job cuts
A rescue deal for British Steel involving the Chinese company Jingye could mean around 500 job losses if such a deal goes ahead, according to three unions – the GMB, Community and Unite – which make up the Steel Committe. While all three unions claim to support the deal, they have said that they cannot endorse job cuts.

Big River Steel shows interest in Tata's Orb steel plant
Rather than shut up shop and close its Orb steelworks in Newport, South Wales, UK, Tata Steel has decided to ‘mothball’ it instead. The difference between ‘close’ and ‘mothball’ is fairly simple: if you close something, that’s effectively the end of it, but if you ‘mothball’ you stop using it and keep it in good condition so that it can readily be used again.
