Forecast of steel consumption for 2012 revised down 3.5%
The latest World Steel Association (worldsteel) forecast of steel use is that by 2013, steel use in the developed world will still be at 14% below the 2007 level whereas in the emerging and developing economies, it will be 45% above. In 2013, the emerging and developing economies will account for 73% of world steel demand in contrast to 61% in 2007.

Kobe Steel FY 2011 hit by raw material costs
Consolidated segment sales for Kobe Steel’s steel business in fiscal 2011 were flat year on year, at 854.2bn yen (US$10.69bn). Ordinary income declined 38.4bn yen, to a loss of 14.6bn yen (US$182.8M). Although sales prices went up, ordinary income was largely affected by the rise in raw material prices.

US imports of steel well up on 2011 to date
According to figures released by the American International Institute for Steel (AIIS), steel imports to USA slipped in February. Based on preliminary government data, the AIIS said that imports declined 4.5% in February 2012 over January 2012.
