According to figures released by the American International Institute for Steel (AIIS), steel imports to USA slipped in February. Based on preliminary government data, the AIIS said that imports declined 4.5% in February 2012 over January 2012.
“While the preliminary data show a decline, a decline of this size could be erased when the final data are released in mid-April – adjustments usually run between 2 to 10%. The level of total imports for February – finished and semi finished – reflect improved market conditions in late Fall 2011 when non-NAFTA products were ordered,” said David Phelps, the AIIS president.
Total steel imports in February 2012 were 2.688M stons compared to 2.815M stons in January 2012, a 4.5% decline, but a 45.7% increase compared to February 2011. For the year-to-date period, imports increased from 3.962M stons in the first two months of 2011 to 5.503M stons in the same period 2012, a 38.9% increase.
