LA steel demand remains flat
Apparent finished steel use in Latin America (exluding Venezuela which lacked data) and the Caribbean reached 15.3Mt in Jan/Mar 2013, 2% less than during the same period of 2012. Meanwhile, finished steel production decreased 1% compared to Jan/Mar 2012, reaching 13.5Mt.

Tuwairqi Steel DRI record production
Tuwairqi Steel Mills Ltd (TSML) DRI plant in Pakistan recorded the highest production of an iron making plant in Pakistan during the Plant Demonstration Test (PDT) conducted by plant supplier, Midrex of USA.

SAIL Expansion to be Completed by 2013-14
Majority state owned Steel Authority for India (SAIL) has undertaken modernisation and expansion at its five integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur and Burnpur and Special Steel Plant at Salem to increase its total crude steel production capacity from 12.84Mt/y to 21.40Mt/y in the current phase.

HIsmelt- plant goes to China
Rio Tinto’s HIsmelt pilot plant at Kwinana in Australia is to be dismantled and moved to China’s Shandong province.
