Carbon-free steelmaking a step closer, says voestalpine
De-carbonising the steel production process is, if you like, the holy grail for steelmakers globally and one company that is streets ahead in terms of developing a carbon-free steel manufacturing process is the Austrian company, Voestalpine.

NLMK improves steel sales
During 2017, Russian steelmaker NLMK increased steel output to 17.1Mt and improved sales by 3% year-on-year to 16.47Mt. The company recovered demand in its home markets of Russia, Europe and the US, and grew demand in external markets. Sales of finished steel increased by 5% to 10.8Mt and accounted for more than 65% of the Group’s total sales.
During Q4 2017 the company grew its crude steel output by 2% year-on-year to 4.32Mt. Sales were up 3% to 4.4Mt and when compared to the same period in 2016 sales were up 20% and driven by increased demand for flat steel in Russia and the USA. Group sales in home markets totalled 2.82Mt.

US steel associations at loggerheads over Section 232
Following the submission of the US Commerce Department’s report of its 9-month investigation on whether steel imports into the US are a threat to national security, US Steel has urged President Trump to take swift and decisive action. “Our nation cannot afford to allow the continued rise of foreign imports that undermine America’s capacity to produce the steel necessary for our country’s national and economic security.”

3D employee positioning system developed by NLMK-SAP
NLMK-SAP Innovations Lab together with the National Centre of Internet of Things (NCIT) have developed a pilot 3D positioning system for shop-floor employees of hot-dip galvanizing line No.1 at NLMK Group’s Lipetsk site.

A five-strand billet caster from SMS Concast has been ordered by Saarstahl AG of Volklingen, Germany. The new equipment will be designed for an annual capacity of 850kt/yr of billets.

MMK to build US390 million sinter plant
Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) is preparing to buld a new sinter plant in Magnitogorsk worth an estimated RUB22 billion (USD390 million).
