US economy looks forward to brighter 2013
In its January Newsletter the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS) reports that the steel market in the USA for both domestic and import suppliers is improving now that the uncertainty that burdened corporate decision makers in late 2012 has ended.

EU steel responding well to lower construction demand
Sheffield based steel market analyst’s, MEPS International Ltd estimates that demand for steel from the EU construction industry has declined by between 45 and 50% since the financial crisis of 2008. The market remains tough but the steelmakers have made significant progress in minimising the impact of the fall in demand.

Krakatau Steel halves investment in 2013
Krakatau Steel, Southeast Asia’s largest steelmaker, plans to spend Rp6.5tr (US$674M) in capital expenditure this year. This year’s investment will be half that of the Rp13tr it set aside for last year.

Indonesia seeks anti-dumping duty on cold rolled coil
The Indonesian Trade Ministry has submitted its recommendation to the Finance Ministry for the imposition of up to 74% anti-dumping duties on imported cold rolled coil and cold rolled sheet to protect the local industry from unfair practices.

Hyundai Steel orders dry vacuum degassing
Hyundai Steel of Korea has contracted MTAG Technology to design and supply a dry vacuum degassing system for its Incheon Works in Incheon South Korea. The unit will consist of four stages of pumps capable of degassing 70t heats.
