The punishment for breaking environmental laws in China is less severe than in other parts of the world and this fact – along with the fact that scrap is more expensive than iron ore – has led to a situation where the use of scrap in steel production has dropped by 21.7kg year-on-year between January and May 2013.

Chinese crude steel output to reach 800Mt in 2014
China’s 2013 crude steel output is likely to reach 784Mt, according to figures released by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), and could reach 800Mt in 2014 – based on an estimated GDP growth of 7.4%.

Thyssen US sale prompts steel pricing worries
German steel producer Thyssen Krupp – Germany’s largest steelmaker by output – has set cats among pigeons where steel pricing is concerned following rumours that the company is on the verge of selling its unprofitable Steel Americas business comprising a steel plant in Calvert, Alabama, USA, and a slab facility in Brazil.

Major Chinese steelmakers cut output to fend off losses
China’s crude steel production in September was up 11% y-o-y to 65.42Mt and output for the year to September was up 8% y-o-y to 587.38Mt, according to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
