Emirates Steel sets record production rate
Over the past 12 months, Emirates Steel has set a new DRI production record. The company has produced 2Mt of high quality direct reduced iron (DRI) operating for more than 8,400 hours (equivalent to 105% net availability) for 315 days non-stop.

SMS group supplies MMK's latest hot dip galvanising line – ahead of schedule
Russian steelmaker PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has commissioned a third new hot-dip galvanising line bang on schedule, thanks to the services of German plant builder SMS group.

Third hot-dip galvanising line for PRO-TEC on stream by 2019
Growing demand in North America for automotive high-strength steel sheet has prompted the development of a third continuous galvanising line in Leipsec, Ohio, home of PRO-TEC Coating Company, a long-established joint venture between Japanese steelmaker Kobe Steel and the United States Steel Corporation (US Steel).

Nucor to build steel bar micro mill
American steelmaker Nucor Corporation has announced that it has approved the construction of a steel bar micro mill and is currently considering five states in the Midwest and Southeast for the project. The states under consideration include Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina and Florida. Nucor will also expand its existing merchant bar operations in either Illinois or Ohio.

Tata Steel/tk joint venture cautiously welcomed by local MP
Following on from news yesterday of a planned joint venture between steelmakers Thyssenkrupp and Tata Steel, Stephen Kinnock, MP for Aberavon, home of the Port Talbot steelworks, commented: "In principle I welcome this news as it brings together two giants of the European steel industry, creating the sort of scale and synergies that could potentially deliver significant competitive advantage.
