Russian steelmaker PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has commissioned a third new hot-dip galvanising line bang on schedule, thanks to the services of German plant builder SMS group.

The plant, which was commissioned in July, was supplied in its entirety by the SMS group and is designed to process 360kt/yr of galvanised cold strip.

According to SMS group, the new line has enhanced MMK's production capacity of galvanised steel by almost 20% to reach an annual output of more than 2Mt.

The line hot dip galvanises cold-rolled, thin, low-carbon steel strips which are used in the construction and packaging industries.

The line was supplied to MMK from one source, including mechanical equipment, process and furnace technologies, electrical and automation systems. The finished material has widths of between 800 and 1,400mm and thicknesses ranging from 0.25 to 1.0mm and a maximum speed in the process section of 180 metres/minute. In the entry and exit sections the speed reaches a maximum of 250 metres/minute.

SMS group has already supplied MMK with a hot-dip galvanising line and a universal annealing and hot-dip galvanising line, both of which went on stream in 2012.

The latest line can be found on the site of rolling mill number 11 at Magnitogorsk in the southern Ural mountains.
