German steel for Ruhr and Rhine push barges
German steel giant thyssenKrupp has received a follow-up order for 2,500 tons of rolled steel from inland waterways operator Neue Ruhrorter Schiffswerft (NRS). The steel will be used to build push barges that are used to transport ores and commodities along the Ruhr, Rhine and other rivers.

CSUSTL applauds US Commerce Department’s confirmation of China’s NME status
The Committee to Support US Trade Laws (CSUSTL) has welcomed (and applauded) the determination issued by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) that China’s economy should continue to be properly treated as a non-market economy (NME) for the purposes of calculating anti-dumping margins.

India number one importer and consumer of stainless steel scrap, says BIR
India is the world’s number one importer and consumer of stainless steel scrap, according to the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). This is not only because of the amount of stainless steel produced in India (it is second only to China) but also because of the very high proportion of scrap to primary use in its production mix.

Global construction sector bears brunt of recent steel price hikes
Over the period January to September 2017, the average cost of steel, purchased for use in the global construction sector, increased by 18.7%. Less substantial, but double-digit steel price rises were also recorded for steel used in the shipbuilding industry and machinery manufacturing sectors.

Moderate but continued growth expected for global steel demand
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) celebrated its 50th anniversary with the news that global steel demand will reach 1,622.1Mt in 2017 and will reach 1,648.4Mt in 2018.
