India companies record growth
India’s largest private steelmakers posted double-digit growth in sales volume y-o-y.
Ispat Industries sales rocketed 70% in February 2010 compared to the year-before period, backed by demand from the automotive and infrastructure industries.
The rise in housing activities also lifted volume growth for steel as did the low base effect as companies were producing less the previous year due to low demand.

Australia CO2 emitters
Australia’s Climate Change Department has released a list of the country’s largest greenhouse gas emitters – which includes three steel-based companies.
The largest steel industry emitter was Bluescope Steel which emitted 7.95Mt of CO2 equivalent for the year up to June 30, 2009, followed by miner Rio Tinto with 7.62Mt and BHP Billiton with 5.06Mt of CO2.
