Benchmarks under the ETS to be judged at a national level
The allocation of free allowances under the ETS scheme will have to be implemented according to the benchmarks set by the Commission. However, if a court case challenging these at a national level is successful, the Commission may have to change its benchmarks retroactively.

Gas stirring by automated connection
MTUS Technology of Ohio, USA has introduced an Automatic Argon Hook-Up System developed to automate the connection to the ladle for argon stirring. It can be used while the ladle is on the transfer car, or the ladle turret, or at ladle treatment stations and even in vacuum degassing tanks.

Anshan drops plan for Indian steel plant
China’s second-largest steelmaker, Anshan Group has scrapped a plan to build a steelworks in India because of uncertainties in resource allocations. It is, however, continuing talks for a planned plant in the USA.

MMK expands into market for ship-building plate
MMK is investing in abrasive blast cleaning equipment for rolling shop No 9, which houses its 5000mm Plate Mill. This will allow MMK to produce AB2-1 and AB2-2 shipbuilding steels, which have to undergo thorough surface cleaning on both sides.

DRI production in India
India produced 22Mt DRI in 2011, a drop of 1.45Mt (7%) from 2010 but the country still remains the world’s largest producer by a wide margin.
