Chinese mills sustain substantial losses
China’s steel companies are on the edge of making a tremendous loss due to the sluggish domestic market, as profits of large and medium-sized steelmakers in the country was slashed by 94.26% year on year in the first five months of 2012 resulting in the ratio of return on sale dropping to a mere 0.17%.

China to tighten pollutant control on I&S sector
China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) has approved eight emission standards including those for the iron and steel industry, which further tighten the emission limits of particles and sulphur dioxide, add discharge limits of nitrogen oxides and set much stricter rules on water and air pollutant discharge limits in environmentally sensitive areas.

Baosteel to move 30% of capacity from Shanghai
The Baosteel Group reaches an agreement with the Shanghai government in July to move part of its production capacity out of Shanghai for the sake of strategic optimization. The agreement is still subject to the central government’s approval.
