The USA imported a total of 1.8Mt tons of steel in February 2021, including 1.4Mt of finished steel (down 22.0% and up 15%, respectively compared with January final data).26 March 2021 -
Nucor to build $164 million Midwest tube mill
American steel giant Nucor Corporation has announced plans to build a $164 million 240kt/yr tube mill in the Midwest of the USA, the largest consuming region for steel and steel products. Products from the new facility will capitalize on investments already made by the company in the region including a plate mill, galvanizing line and hot roll expansion. According to Nucor, the new tube mill is a continuation of the company's focus on growth and commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The new mill will be operational in two years, it is claimed.

Russian steelmaker joins K1-MET European Competence Centre
Russian steelmaker NLMK Group, a global steel company, has become an industrial partner with K1-MET, a leading European Competence Centre from Austria for the development of advanced metallurgical and environmental processes. In co-operation with the shareholders of K1-MET —voestalpine Stahl, Primetals Technologies Austria, Montanuniversität Leoben, and Johannes Kepler University Linz — NLMK is going to implement projects aimed at ensuring the efficient use and processing of recyclables in steelmaking operations.

The International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) has appointed Eva Model as its next secretary-general, effective 1 September 2021. She will succeed Tim Outteridge, who announced his retirement in September 2020.

World crude steel production up 4.1%, says worldsteel
World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 150.2Mt in February 2021, an increase of 4.1% when compared to February 2020.

Contingency plans drawn up for potential Liberty collapse
