Following hot on the heels of news that Swedish car manufacturer Volvo was the first customer to receive fossil-free steel produced by Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology – or HYBRIT, technology developed by Swedish steelmaker SSAB, mining company LKAB and energy company Vattenfall – news has reached Steel Times International that Mercedes is rumoured to be the second major automaker to buy the new green steel.

Hybrit's ultimate goal is to deliver fossil-free steel to the market and demonstrate the technology on an industrial scale as early as 2026. Using HYBRIT technology, SSAB claims that it has the potential to reduce Sweden’s total carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 10% and Finland’s by approximately 7%.
