Artificial Intelligence and Steelmaking Summit
16 November 2021
In association with Steel Times International

About the event:

The Artificial Intelligence and Steelmaking Summit is an exclusive one-day online event brought to you by the makers of the Future Steel Forum* and the Sustainable Steel Strategies Summit. The event is aimed solely at global steel professionals.

The term ‘artificial intelligence’ has been with us for a long time, but it is only relatively recently that steel manufacturers from around the world have started to employ AI and machine learning technologies in the process of making steel.

With the recent coming of age of Industry 4.0 – the subject of Steel Times International’s popular Future Steel Forum conferences – and the continuing development of the various technologies that embody the philosophy behind it, AI has come to the fore and is now widely regarded as the beating heart of what is known as ‘the smart factory’.

For some time now leading steelmakers have forged ahead with the deployment of AI on their production lines and beyond. ArcelorMittal, POSCO, Hyundai Steel, SSAB, Big River Steel and Tata Steel, to name but a few, are taking so-called ‘smart manufacturing’ to the next level as they implement the key tenets of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

There was a time when AI was described as ‘black-art techniques’ and for a lot of people outside of industrial manufacturing it is still epitomised by HAL, the computer on board the space ship Discovery in Stanley Kubrick’s epic movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. And while we’re on the subject of cultural AI references, let’s not forget the novels of the great Philip K. Dick and in particular Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, filmed by Ridley Scott as Blade Runner.

The Artificial Intelligence and Steelmaking Summit aims to create a picture for delegates of what AI means to steelmakers – and what it can do for steel manufacturing. Ultimately, it is all about process optimisation, streamlining, efficiency, sustainability and productivity. Our carefully selected speakers will impart their knowledge of this extremely important and highly relevant topic.
