Latin America trade deficit for finished steel 4.9Mt in 5-months
Finished steel apparent use in Latin America was 28Mt between January-May 2013, similar to the same period of 2012. Finished steel production reached 23Mt 1% less than January/ May 2012.

voestalpine awards contract for HBI plant in Texas
Such is the impact of low gas prices in USA following the exploitation of shale gas plays coupled with the pending cost penalties for CO2 emissions in Europe, that Austrian steelmaker voestalpine is to build a DRI plant in Texas to produce hot briquetted iron (HBI) to ship across the Atlantic and up the Danube as part of the charge for its blast furnaces in Linz and Donawitz.
