Tariffs introduced to help South Australian steelmaker
Duties of between 37% and 53% are to be slapped on unfairly priced Chinese steel by Australia’s Federal Government with a view to helping South Australian steelmaker, Arrium, remain competitive. The company, which recently announced debts of $4 billion, has gone into voluntary administration.

SSAB launches EcoSmart steel
Global steelmaker SSAB’s North American Division, SSAB Americas, has launched EcoSmart sustainable steel made from 97% recycled materials diverted from landfills.

MMK beefs up its environmental programme
Russian steelmaker OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has implemented a Clean City strategic initiative driven, it says, by an update of the company’s environmental management system based on the recently approved Strategic Development Plan, which takes the company through to 2025.

British Government vows to take 25% stake in Tata rescue deal
The BBC news website has just reported that the British Government will take a 25% stake in any rescue deal for Tata Steel UK, following the recent announcement by the Indian parent that it plans pull out of the UK market in response to the damaging effects of cheap Chinese steel imports, high energy costs and punitive business rates.

World crude steel production for March 2016 down 3.6%
World crude steel production was 385.7 Mt in the first three months of 2016, down 3.6% compared with the same period in 2015, according to figures released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
