NLMK La Louvière, a leading producers of flat steel coils in Belgium and part of the Russian NLMK Group, has received the first major equipment for its EUR 150 million hot strip mill upgrade that will enable the company to expand the production of thinner, stronger and more environmentally friendly steel for customers in the European Union.

MMK Group to spend big on its environmental programme for 2020
Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has approved its environmental goals for 2020 and the MMK Group's environmental programme, which will cost RUB 13.3 billion (US$180 million) this year of which RUB 12.95 billion (US$175 million) will be allocated by the parent company.

Ovako first in the world to heat steel using hydrogen
Scandinavian steelmaker Ovako and Linde Gas AB have conducted a full-scale trial using hydrogen to heat steel before rolling. The steelmaker claims that the trial was performed with good results in one of the company’s pit furnaces at the Hofors rolling mill in Sweden. "This historic development for the steel industry proves that carbon dioxide emissions from rolling can be eliminated provided the right financial support and infrastructure are in place," Ovako said.

ArcelorMittal reacts to COVID-19 pandemic
ArcelorMittal has announced that it has furloughed 250 employees at its plant in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The company says that its customers – largely in the automotive and construction industries – have closed down plants due to the corona virus and that this has affected work at the plant. The furloughs are not expected to last more than six months, according to an online report.
