World Steel Industry: a retrospective of 100 essays (in Portugese)

By Germano Mendes de Paula

Dr Germano Mendes de Paula, Professor of Economics at Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil, and a regular contributor to Steel Times International, has recently launched a new book “Siderurgia Internacional: uma retrospectiva de 100 reflexões”. The book is written in Portuguese.

This book gathers the first hundred articles published consecutively in the magazine ‘Metalurgia & Materiais’ (Metallurgy & Materials), from January 2001 to June 2010.

The geographical location tends towards Asian countries which have been revolutionising the world steel industry in the past decade. An article, written in 2003, can be considered the inflection point of this trend of emphasising emerging markets.

The book includes a discussion of the competitive dynamics in the world steel industry, viewed from several approaches. The intense M&A process, growing internationalisation, strategic alliances, the return of the importance of vertical integration, and investments for expanding capacity and changing the product mix constitute the core of the 100 articles.

Published by the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining (ABM), the book can be purchased on-line at:
