A contract worker in his mid-20s has died in an accident at BlueScope’s Port Kembla steelworks in New South Wales, Australia.

The worker was struck by a falling steel beam, with the incident occurring at around 10:30 (local time).

BlueScope’s preliminary assessment of the incident was that a crane lifting the beam had fallen and hit the worker.

In a statement, a BlueScope spokesperson said: "Our immediate priority is supporting our people, the first responders and the family of those involved.”

They continued: “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and will provide further information when we are able."
