Primetals Technologies has started a software upgrade project for Voestalpine’s BETA 2 pickling line and tandem cold mill (PLTCM) in Linz, Austria.
The project will see the upgrade of the Level 1 and Level 2 process control systems.
Primetals has highlighted that the upgrade will strengthen IT security, increase system availability and ensure the PLTCM meets the latest standards in automation.
The project includes the upgrade to the latest Siemens PCS7 version, integrating third-party packages into a unified PCS7 project, and migrating the process automation systems to new Windows and Oracle environments.
To enhance system availability and streamline software maintenance, all engineering systems will be integrated into Voestalpine’s visualisation environment.
The BETA 2 line produces high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel for the automotive and construction industries.
Primetals has a history of working with Voestalpine, with the company implementing a major upgrade of the BETA 3 cold rolling mill.
The two companies are also collaborating on several major iron- and steelmaking projects, such as the HYFOR and Smelter hydrogen-based industrial-scale demonstration plant and the implementation of a 180T electric arc furnace, all located in Linz.
