US Steel generated $536.2m in total economic impact in Alabama during FY 2024 as a result of its operations.

The figures were released in the company’s latest economic impact study, which showed that US Steel contributed $12.4m in state and local taxes, and supported 1,963 jobs.

Will Ainsworth, Alabama Lieutenant Governor, said: “Steel has long been a cornerstone of Alabama’s economy, and it continues to play a critical role in our state’s growth and competitiveness.

“Companies such as US Steel create good-paying jobs that support families and strengthen communities across our state. US Steel’s continued investment strengthens Alabama’s position as a national leader in manufacturing and helps drive economic opportunity throughout our supply chain. Alabama values its relationship with companies like US Steel and continues working every day to be the most pro-business state in America.”

Often called the ‘Pittsburgh of the South’, Birmingham, Alabama has a historic connection with steelmaking.

David B. Burritt, CEO of US Steel, added: “For more than a century, U. S. Steel has been honoured to be part of Alabama.

“Alabama represents the best of what American manufacturing can be: strong communities, skilled people, and a deep industrial heritage. Now, with significant investments in advanced steelmaking, Alabama is becoming an even more important part of our strategy to grow stronger, compete harder, and win for decades to come.”
