Tata Steel’s Hooghly Met Coke (HMC) division has become the first non-recovery coke-making unit in India to produce 25Mt of coke in a single campaign life.

HMC, based in Haldia, set the milestone on 29 June and achieved it without the unit undergoing any major repairs.

Chaitanya Bhanu, vice president of operations at Tata Steel Jamshedpur, said: "As the first non-recovery coke-making unit in India to cross 25Mt, HMC’s uninterrupted operations for nearly two decades is a testament to Tata Steel's ability to maximise asset life and manage processes with unmatched efficiency.”

Tata also added that despite facing challenges such as heavy monsoons, corrosive saline conditions and cyclonic impacts, the HMC team were able to consistently deliver high-quality coke to the company’s blast furnaces.

HMC is Asia’s largest standalone coke plant with a production capacity of 1.6Mt per annum. Commissioned over 17 years ago, the plant efficiently utilises 100% of its flue gas to generate 120 MW of power, contributing to Tata’s sustainable operations.

Tata concluded that the accomplishment is a true reflection of the company’s commitment to innovation, and excellence in the iron-making process.
