Tata Steel UK has welcomed the UK government’s consultation on a scheme that aims to reduce electricity costs for growth sectors, such as steel.
Tata Steel’s head of public affairs, Tom Evans, said: “We very much welcome this important step towards ensuring that UK industry remains globally competitive during the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“This scheme has the potential to provide vital support for UK manufacturing as we undertake the most significant transformation in UK steelmaking in decades.
Evans also highlighted how the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) reduce industrial costs by £35-£40 per MWh. This reduction would help an industry already facing tariffs, renewables obligations and capacity market levies.
Evans concluded: “We look forward to working with the UK Government to ensure the scheme recognises the specific needs of energy-intensive industries such as ours, and helps sustain high-quality jobs, promote regional economic strength, and reinforce the UK’s industrial base for the future.”
The consultation closes on 19 January 2026
