Tata Steel’s subsidiary UKSE is supporting Port Talbot’s young rugby stars.
UKSE has donated £1000 from its Community Fund, which aims to enhance rugby facilities and construct a play area for the youngsters at the family-friendly club.
The donation comes after Tata Steel ceased ironmaking at its Port Talbot site and temporarily paused steelmaking pending the construction of its electric arc furnace from October 2024, a restructure which cut 2,800 jobs.
Coach of the junior rugby section for the Aberavon Quins, or The Mighty Quins as they are better known, Ashley Jones, stated: “Our Junior section is strong with three youth sides, under 7, under 10 and under 13. There are many families here on match days and we want to provide them with a good experience when they visit and encourage them to support the club and its work.”
“This type of project is exactly the reason we established our Community Fund which supports local initiatives here in Neath Port Talbot and further afield across South Wales,” said Howard Thompson, regional executive with UKSE in Wales.
The grounds are where professional rugby players such as Regan Grace learnt the basics of the game.
