Tata Steel has been awarded the highest rating (‘A’) in the CDP 2024 Supplier Engagement Assessment (SEA).
The SEA is an initiative by the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) that measures the efforts of companies to engage with their suppliers on climate change.
The SEA assesses:
- Governance
- Targets
- Scope 3 emissions
- Value chain engagement
Rajiv Mangal, vice president of safety health and sustainability at Tata Steel, said: "Ensuring that all partners in the value chain are aligned with our Net Zero journey is vital to our ongoing efforts towards lowering the Scope 3 emissions.
“Further, new global challenges such as carbon taxes levied in certain export markets also makes it imperative that we address the emission challenge at every level. The ‘A’ rating by CDP not only validates our climate change efforts but also motivates us to do more."
In order to align its suppliers with their sustainability goals, the company engages with them via initiatives such as environmental assessments and screenings.
To aid in their broader sustainability goals, Tata Steel implements practices including: modern warehousing, energy-efficient ships, and digital tools to help streamline cargo and material goals.
Peeyush Gupta, vice president of TQM, groups strategic procurement and supply chain at Tata Steel, added: "Steel is among the few sectors that face hard to abate greenhouse gas emissions and thus demand the involvement of several downstream suppliers, contractors and partners.
“Therefore, for climate action to be comprehensively effective, it must involve all. This recognition is a testament to our efforts in decarbonising the Indian steel sector."
