Kapfenberg, Austria-based voestalpine Böhler Edelstahl has taken on the German SMS group to supply the main melting-area components for voestalpine’s new stainless steel plant in Kapfenberg, Austria.

Voestapline Böhler Edelstahl, a subsidiary of international technology and capital goods group voestalpine, has placed an order with SMS group for an electric arc furnace, an AOD converter and secondary metallurgical facilities needed for the construction of a brand new stainless steel plant.

According to SMS group, the planned Kapfenberg plant ‘will set new standards in energy efficiency, environmental protection as well as innovative automation of the production processes’.

The new plant will replace voestalpine Böhler Edelstahl’s existing facility at Kapfenberg and will produce 205kt/yr of high-performance steels for use in the aerospace and automotive industries as well as oil and gas.

The new plant will occupy a 50,000 sq m site and will be the most advanced stainless steel production facility in the world, according to SMS group.

A high degree of automation and digitalisation will feature strongly across all the plant’s production processes.

Hot commissioning will take place mid-2021.
