SMS group wins new order for two PQF® seamless tube plants from Baosteel Steel Pipe in China

German plant builder SMS group has secured a new order from Chinese steelmaker Baosteel Steel Pipe (Ma’anshan) Science and Technology Co., Ltd. The contract is to deliver two PQF® seamless tube rolling lines (PQF®: premium quality finishing) to Ma’anshan, Anhui Province, China, solidifying a long-standing partnership between the two companies.


SMS will deliver all core components and automation systems for two PQF seamless tube plants.


According to SMS, the PQF159 includes a cone roll piercing mill CTP1000VD, a seven-inch PQF® BCO mill, and a 350A28 stretch reducing mill (SRM).


The PQF258 comprises a CTP1150VD cone roll piercing mill, a 10-inch PQF® BCO mill, and a 500A20 stretch reducing mill. SMS will also provide two PQF® redressing machines for the PQF® stands and two KR roll groove dressing machines for the SRM stands.

In addition to the mechanical equipment, SMS will also supply complete level 1 automation, a technological measurement system (TMS), and CARTAneo® process technology software. This fully integrated automation solution, says SMS, features, the latest advancements in crop end control (CEC), wall thickness control (WTCA and WTCL), as well as comprehensive metrology data analysis throughout the PQF® mills.

SMS says that PQF® technology enables the plant to run with maximum efficiency, optimised operational costs, and reduced downtimes, while at the same time maintaining high productivity and quality. Compared with legacy seamless tube lines, PQF® plants deliver higher precision and performance, it is claimed, helping Baosteel achieve its production and quality objectives.
