SMS group has upgraded the existing two-strand SMS Concast bloom caster at Mukand’s Kalwa facility in Thane, India.
The project involved the revamp of the plant’s first-generation casters to support the production of stainless-steel rebar and wire rods, including the supply of a new 250mm x 300mm bloom section for the bar mill.
The introduction of the new bloom section has expanded Mukand’s product range and enabled its entry into new market segments.
SMS highlighted that to complete the project, it delivered a comprehensive upgrade package, covering supply, installation and commissioning. The package also included technologies such as a state-of-the-art air-mist cooling system for superior thermal control and improved casting quality, and a next-generation withdrawal and straightening unit equipped with an AC drive, ensuring smoother and more reliable operation.
The completion of the project was marked with the presentation of the final acceptance certificate from Mukand.
The bloom caster was commissioned in 1984 and has been pivotal in steel production at the Kalwa plant over the last four decades.
