The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has certified the Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) base year emissions and Science-Based Emissions Targets (SBET) of Indiana-based Steel Dynamics, making it the first steel producer to receive this certification.

The SBET submitted by Indiana-based Steel Dynamics sets an ambitious goal of reducing emissions by more than 15% by 2030 for its hot rolled steel production.

''Our certification recognizes Steel Dynamics for its leadership on decarbonization and taking a forward-leaning approach to continue cutting emissions across the company.”

Adina Renee Adler, executive director, GSCC

“As GSCC steel producers begin to publish their interim and long-term emissions reduction targets, their ambition and commitment toward achieving the IEA’s 2050 net zero goal will accelerate. Our certification recognizes Steel Dynamics for its leadership on decarbonization and taking a forward-leaning approach to continue cutting emissions across the company,” said Adina Renee Adler, executive director, GSCC.

In the company’s submission for GSCC certification, which was independently verified by KERAMIDA, Inc., Steel Dynamics uses a 2022 base year to calculate a CASEI of 0.94 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot rolled steel produced and set an interim SBET of 0.80 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel produced by 2030. The steelmaker further set a long-term goal of 0.12 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel produced by 2050. In compliance with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard, Steel Dynamics will self-declare a CASEI value annually and has already confirmed a 2023 CASEI of 0.85 metric tons of CO2e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel produced.

''As steel producers begin to establish and execute targets aligned with the GSCC standards, the actual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will accelerate.''

Mark D. Millett, founder, chairman, and CEO of Steel Dynamics, a founding member-company of GSCC

“We are proud to announce our GSCC certified, science-based targets. As steel producers begin to establish and execute targets aligned with the GSCC standards, the actual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will accelerate. Steel Dynamics is already a leader in producing lower-carbon emissions steel products. We plan to continue to address decarbonization issues and to play a leadership role in developing innovative ways to reduce our carbon impact,” stated Mark D. Millett, founder, chairman, and CEO of Steel Dynamics, a founding member-company of GSCC.
