The Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant has partnered with Primetals Technologies for the engineering phase of a hydrogen gas injection system.

The system will be utilised on a blast furnace at the facility in Bokaro Steel City, to partially replace conventional fuels, which contribute to CO₂ emissions in the steelmaking process. The phased introduction of hydrogen enables controlled adaptation and optimisation.

It will be funded by the Indian government under a carbon reduction scheme, which also supports SAIL’s broader environmental goals.

Gas injection is increasing in popularity as steelmakers seek to reduce their emissions. Primetals has provided design solutions for this area for over 40 years and has previously established engineering expertise for these systems within India.

SAIL and Primetals have a track record of collaboration across multiple projects, including the modernisation of automation systems at Bokaro’s hot strip mill and the installation of a fourth Hot Blast Stove at the IISCO plant (currently under construction).
