A recent report by Times of India highlighted the accidental death of a contractual work at Steel Authority of India Ltd's blast furnace department at the Durgapur steel plant.

The 26-year-old contract worker died in an accident at Durgapur Steel Plant’s blast furnace department on Friday night during routine maintenance work.

According to the newspaper report, Sk Sahidul from nearby West Burdwan was working alone on Friday night when the accident took place at around 2300hrs. "Workers suspect a guardrail broke while he was working, causing Sahidul to fall into a ladle of molten slag," it was reported.

Co-workers rushed to the scene and discovered Sahidul's burnt body and later the fire brigade recovered it. Plant management has set up an inquiry to investigate the incident.

Steel workers at the plant have 'staged an agitation' and demanded compensation and stronger safety measures. The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS)-affiliated Ispat Karmachari Sangh's general secretary Rishikesh Kumar, demanded a First Information Report (FIR) against the management of the plant and examination of CCTV footage.

SAIL-DSP’s Contract Labour Cell issued a letter to the victim’s family, expressing grief and assuring suitable compassionate employment to one eligible dependent.

Sahidul had been married for just 15 days prior to his death.
