Primetals Technologies has begun a strategic partnership with Polytec for the development and commercialisation of a robotic system for wire rod mills.
TrimRob is intended to be the industry’s first foundry-rated system designed to automate the trimming and sampling process.
Primetals highlighted that the collaboration combines its long rolling industry expertise with Polytec’s cutting-edge capabilities in automation and robotics, resulting in a ‘highly accurate, repeatable, and self-contained robotic solution for efficient coil finishing’.
Equipped with a vision system and specialised trimming end-effector, TrimRob automates trimming and sampling tasks with high precision and repeatability. These tasks include accurately counting coil rings and detecting tangles.
Furthermore, traditional coil trimming is labour-intensive and hazardous. TrimRob effectively eliminates these risks by integrating into existing production lines.
By removing operators from congested and hazardous areas, wire rod mills can significantly improve safety and reduce maintenance.
Polytec is a leader in robotics for the steel industry. Founded as an automation system integrator, the company specialises in solutions that combine robotics, artificial intelligence, process automation, and software to enhance safety and improve productivity.
