Primetals Technologies has installed a torch-cutting machine at Konepeikko Oy’s scrap recycling facility in Imatra, Finland.
The recycling solution is part of Primetals’ latest advancements in scrap and has already contributed to a decrease in noise emissions to 90db.
Ossi Hulkko, a foreman at Konepeikko, said: “We used to cut scrap with hand-cutting torches, but with this machine, the process is much faster and more operator-friendly. We clearly see the benefits in safer operations, and the camera monitoring feature gives us a good view of the torch-cutting process.”
The machine also includes an efficient dedusting system that Primetals highlighted can keep dust emissions well below regulatory limits.
The project can handle a range of scrap including billets, blooms and bundles of rolled bars.
According to the World Steel Association, scrap use in steelmaking is expected to reach 1 billion tons annually in the next few years, so the new machine positions Konepeikko to meet this surge in demand.
Konepeikko specialises in the acquisition and processing of steel scrap. The company processes 50kt of recycled materials annually.
