Primetals Technologies and BGH Edelstahl have completed the first melting tests of the Active Power Feeder at BGH’s electric arc furnace (EAF).
The Active Power Feeder represents a step forward in sustainable electric steelmaking, as it uses a patented medium-voltage modulator (MMC) and an innovative power control system developed by Primetals.
Primetals highlighted that, in addition to reducing energy consumption, the Active Power Feeder achieved significantly greater flicker reduction than traditional methods.
Furthermore, the solution also decreases power-on times compared to static synchronous compensator technology.
The Active Power Feeder is integrated into the EAF using a container-based design and is installed approximately 200m away from the furnace on a rooftop.
The solution at BGH includes two parallel modular multilevel converters. The second converter was installed in December 2025 and was commissioned in January of this year.
Both converters are expected to be fully operational by mid-2026.
