CRU’s Indian office reports that the Indian Supreme Court’s hearing on 3rd September 2012 has concurred with the Central Empowered Committee (CEC)’s recommendations in its report published 29th August to allow 18 mines in Category A to re-start operations.

Iron ore swaps volumes hit new records
The volume of iron ore swaps cleared on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) in August surged 42% on July (itself a record month) to 14.88Mt. The level of open interest on SGX also passed a notable milestone, exceeding 10Mt (20000 lots) for the first time on 30 August.

Chinese coke output slowing
China, which has been the largest producer of coke, saw its growth in output decline sharply to 1.2% a drop of 18.6% y-o-y in July of 2012.

Metalloinvest new HBI production facility
Siemens Metals Technologies and consortium partner Midrex Technologies, Inc. signed a contract with the Russian Metalloinvest Company to expand the hot briquetted iron (HBI) production at Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Integrated Works (Lebedinsky GOK) in Gubkin (Belgorod Region, Russia).
