Outokumpu and Alstom have agreed a partnership regarding the supply of low-emission stainless steel for metro cars. As part of the agreement, Outokumpu’s Circle Green stainless steel is set to be used on the latest generation of Alstom Metropolis metro cars.
The partnership supports both companies’ climate targets, with Outokumpu claiming that Circle Green has a carbon footprint up to 93% lower than the global industry average. The first delivery to Alstom is scheduled for 2026.
Rolf Schencking, president for business line advanced materials at Outokumpu said: “Remaining competitive and accelerating the green transition is fundamental to Europe’s future. Stainless steel is the most versatile industrial material, heavily needed for transportation solutions to reduce emissions and playing a vital part for innovation and technological progress.
"Europe needs frontrunner companies throughout the value chain to drive the green transition forward. We are excited to take the next step with Alstom to support our customers’ decarbonization journey."
Furthermore, Alstom targets a 30% reduction in emissions from procured goods and services, with this partnership aiding in this by enabling the company to use a higher steel scrap content rate in its products.
Véronique Andriès, sustainability and CSR vice president at Alstom, said: “Outokumpu’s Circle Green will be used for the outer layer of the metro cars. Our partnership is fully in line with the eco-design process we have applied for years for the design of our products and services.”
Circle Green is currently used by more than 40 leading companies across Europe and Asia from various industry sectors.
