Outokumpu Stainless USA has contracted Primetals Technologies for the supply of an 180-ton twin ladle furnace for its facility in Calvert, Alabama.
The project will replace an existing ladle treatment stand from 2012 and is expected to reduce carbon emissions, improve temperature control, and provide greater operational flexibility.
The Calvert plant melts up to 100% stainless steel scrap in an electric arc furnace, followed by processing in an argon oxygen decarburisation (AOD) converter.
Primetals highlighted that upgrading one of the two ladle treatment stands will increase flexibility in the AOD process by adding electrical heating capacity after the converter.
Furthermore, the scope of supply includes mechanical equipment such as a water-cooled ladle cover integrated with the swing gantry system, Primetals’ patented electrode conducting arm, and the Melt Expert electrode control system.
Primetals also outlined how the Melt Expert system improves furnace productivity by addressing reduced throughput and efficiency. It also lowers energy consumption, helping to mitigate the high energy costs associated with the melting process.
Outokumpu is a leader in sustainable stainless steel, with its products made from 95% recycled materials. The steel is then used in sectors such as infrastructure, mobility and household appliances.
The startup of the furnace is scheduled for March 2028.
