Outokumpu Stainless USA’s (OSU) Calvert, Alabama, plant has successfully received an automation upgrade from Primetals Technologies.
The project between the two included a comprehensive Level 2 automation system upgrade across both meltshop and casting areas.
Upgraded systems, such as EAF Optimiser, AOD Optimiser and Through Process Quality Control, will improve the performance and resource efficiency of the facility. The upgrades also support Outokumpu’s commitment to sustainability by reducing energy demand and improving resource utilisation, while enhancing the plant’s ability to adapt to an ever-changing market.
Lawrence Bailey, Level 2 Network Administrator at Outokumpu in Calvert said: “We have come to recognise Primetals Technologies as a reliable partner in the development of modern automation systems. Going forward, we will be in constant contact and will be able to continuously develop our models as part of the software subscription.”
The new systems are provided under a seven-year subscription, which allows for continuous improvements through software updates. Bailey added: “It is important for us to continually improve the quality and flexibility of our Level 2 automation system. The software subscription for Primetals Technologies’ process optimisation software helps us in this endeavour by keeping all systems up to date.”
The relationship between Outokumpu and Primetals dates to 2012 when the meltshop and caster at the facility were first equipped with advanced process optimisation systems. The London-based company is a world leader in fields of engineering, plant building, and the provision of lifecycle services for the metals industry.
