John R Stubbles, the British born metallurgist and steel industry consultant living in USA died in Essex, England, at the age of 75 while visiting his step mother.
Dr Stubbles was born and educated in England, receiving a bachelor of science degree in metallurgy from Manchester University in 1954. He received a doctorate in chemical metallurgy from London University in 1957.
His career began at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co, Youngstown, Ohio, where he managed technical activities at integrated steel producers, as well as minimills, for 36 years. In 1999, he retired and remained active as an industry consultant, working with the US Department of Energy and the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) and lecturing in energy matters.
Dr Stubbles was active in AIST and was a recipient of the AIST Distinguished Member and Fellow Award in 1984 for his services to education, received the John F Elliott Lecturer Award in 1995, and the Howe Memorial Lecture Award in 1996. In 2006, Dr Stubbles received the AIST J Keith Brimacombe Award.
John Stubbles was also an accomplished painter recording many aspects of his industrial life on canvas.
