Indian steelmaker Mukand Sumi Special Steel (MSSSL) has placed an order with Italian plant builder Danieli for a new blooming mill, which will be installed at its Hospet plant in Karnataka, in the southwest of India.
The new SBQ blooming mill, says Danieli, will have a capacity of 300kt/yr and roll blooms measuring up to 380 mm by 420 mm. The rolled stock will be 160mm to 180mm square billets and 100mm to 200mm-diameter finished round products, mainly in alloy and microalloy steels, ball bearing and file steels, spring steels, and valve steels.
The investment will allow MSSSL to expand its production capacity and optimize its product mix across sectors, such as automotive, engineering, bearings, oil and gas, energy, and infrastructure, also improving yield and surface quality.
Danieli will provide mechanical equipment, process control and electrics, MV motors, advisory and commissioning services, as well as on-site training.
Along with the breakdown mill, a disk saw to cut rolled billets and bars will also be supplied, according to Danieli.
Danieli says that most of the equipment will be manufactured and preassembled for easy installation at Danieli's quality workshops in Andhra Pradesh, near Chennai.
The new blooming mill will be operational by the end of 2026.
