Russian steelmaker PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has commissioned continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit number three, increasing the company's galvanised steel production capacity by almost 20%, to more than 2Mt/yr.
The unit, to be supplied by German steel production technology company SMS group, is designed to produce zinc-coated products through the hot-dip galvanising of cold-rolled, thin-sheet, low-carbon steel. Products from this rolled metal are high-margin, more reliable and longer lasting, according to MMK, and the main consumers of such products are the construction and packaging industries.
The unit was built on the site of strip rolling plant number 11 and boasts a 450kt/yr capacity.
The total cost of its Construction began in September 2015 and cost RUB6.8 billion (US$115 million). More than 3.5kt of metal structure were installed, about 1,500 piles were fixed, around 12.4kt of building envelopes were erected and about 15,000 cubic metres of foundations were filled.
OAO Magnitogorsk Gipromez was the general designer, and the general contractor was OJSC Prokatmontazh.
The implementation of this project is in line with MMK’s strategy to increase its share of high value-added advanced processing products.
