JSW Steel has selected Siemens VAI’s DynaGap soft reduction technology for a second time for its new slab caster at Toranagallu, Karnataka.
The continuous slab caster will have an annual production capacity of 1.4Mt/y and is to be commissioned in mid 2013. The new continuous slab caster will be able to cast slabs with thicknesses between 220 and 260mm, in widths of 800 to1600mm. It will cast carbon steel, micro and low-alloy steels, as well as HSLA (high-strength low-alloy) steels, which will be further processed into sheets, strips and pipe. This will enable the casting of slabs from high-quality, line-pipe steel grades – such as X65 according to the API standard and other microalloyed steels.
The design and equipment of the new continuous slab caster are similar to that of caster No 3, thus simplifying operation, maintenance and spare parts stocks.
Smart Segments are used to contain the strand and adjust the taper and thickness of the withdrawing slab automatically at every point of the strand guiding system to create the conditions for high internal slab quality.
A number of other technology packages ensure an optimal casting process, which produces slabs with both high surface and internal quality. The packages include the Mold Expert breakout detection system, the LevCon mould level control, the DynaFlex mold oscillator, and the VAI-Q inline quality assurance system.
