Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) has commissioned a continuous billet caster at its Raigarh site in the state of Chhattisgarh, central India. The caster has six strands and a capacity of 1Mt/y.

Supplied by SMS Concast a key feature was the short time to commission the unit and ramp it up to full capacity. Just one month after the first billet was cast, the plant is operating at full output.

JSPL is planning to increase capacity at its Raigarh site to 7Mt/y. The new caster with a casting radius of 9m is designed for steels of high carbon content, ball bearing steel and free-machining steels. The design of the withdrawal and straightening units guarantees safe straightening of the billet for these steels as they exit the caster radius.

The scope of supply includes the ‘butterfly’ ladle turret, a high-capacity casting ladle for 30t of liquid steel, a Convex® mould, electromagnetic mould stirrer and mould oscillation.
