John J. Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of the North American steelmaker, Nucor Corp is to be named Steelmaker of the Year at the forthcoming AISTech 2016 conference in Pittsburgh, USA next month.

The award is presented annually and recognises notable leaders for their impact on the steel industry.

As is AISTech tradition, the award will be presented on 17 May during the President's Award Breakfast, one of the signature events of conference and exhibition.

The breakfast programme will consist of the presentation of several association awards, followed by a keynote address entitled, The Future of Steel given by Mario Longhi, president and CEO of US Steel.

Acording to the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) Ferriola is being recognised ‘for his leadership and strategic vision in growing Nucor Steel and maintaining its profitability in an economically challenging steel market’.

Ferriola is often seen as a voice for the entire industry, according to the AIST, articulating to policymakers the problem of unfair trade that is plaguing the US steel market and advocating for the strengthening of US trade laws and their enforcement.

Ferriola began serving as chairman of the board of directors for Nucor in January 2014 and as CEO in January 2013. He served as president and chief operation officer from 2011 to 2013 and served as chief operating officer of steelmaking operations from 2007 to 2011. He served as an executive vice president of Nucor from Between 2002 to 2007 he served as executive vice president of the company and was a vice president from 1996 to 2001.

From 1998 to end 2001, Ferriola was vice president and general manager of the Crawfordsville sheet mill in Indiana and general manager of Nucor Steel–Nebraska from 1995 to 1998. He was general manager of Vulcraft in Grapeland, Texas, USA, in 1995; and manager of maintenance and engineering at Nucor Steel–Texas from 1992 to 1995. 


AISTech 2016 takes place between 16–19 May at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, USA, and will offer a delegates numerous technical presentations, keynote presentations by today's business leaders, an expansive exposition and plant tours.
