Primetals Technologies has successfully installed the first foundry-rated coil trimming and sampling system at Hyundai Steel’s wire rod mill in Dangjin, Korea.
TrimRob is a collaborative effort between Primetals and Polytec, a global leader in robotics.
Ravindra Goyal, head of process for Primetals Technologies USA, said: “Leveraging robots is critical to the steel industry.
“With TrimRob, Hyundai Steel is able to significantly reduce repetitive strain injuries (RSI) while moving operators to higher-value work.”
The robot can handle wire rod up to 20mm in varying grades and strengths, and always cuts at least the required amount.
Traditionally, coil trimming and sampling require two to four operators per shift working with manual cutters to trim the head and tail of coils that reach temperatures of over 1,000°C.
TrimRob consists of a vision system and a specialised trimming-end effector tool, with the robot able to count rings and recognise tangles and overlaps.
Furthermore, the TrimRob uses onboard logic to complete trimming and sampling tasks without human intervention.
Hyundai Steel, established in 1953, is part of the Hyundai Motor Group and manufactures steel products for industries such as automotive, construction, and shipbuilding.
