Tata Steel's Johan Van Boggelen risked life and limb this morning addressing the cokemaking industry at EuroCoke 2019 in Amsterdam.
He calmly informed delegates that the Hlsarna smelting reduction ironmaking process, a coal based technology that does not require coke. By using biomass and scrap over 50% CO2 reduction can be achieved.
According to Van Boggelen, the target with Hlsarna is to be 'sustainable in every way by 2050. He admitted it was an ambitous target, but said that Tata Steel was determined to work towards it.
Hlsarna now has the support of the Dutch Government and is currently focused on the operational and equipment aspects of the process, testing equipment endurance and demonstrating long term process stability.
