The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has announced the certification of Yamato Kogyo Co Ltd’s corporate average steel emissions intensity (CASEI) and science-based emissions target (SBET). Yamato Kogyo’s SBET sets ambitious goals to reduce emissions for its hot-rolled steel production by 2030 and 2050, demonstrating strong leadership in advancing the steel industry’s decarbonization pathway.
“The GSCC welcomes our first certification in Japan and Asia, Yamato Kogyo. With this milestone, GSCC’s certified community continues to expand, building on a foundation where four certified members have already eliminated nearly three million metric tons of CO₂e through independently verified reductions. Yamato Kogyo’s commitment to reach 0.12 metric tons by 2050 exceeds the Steel Climate Standard’s objective and brings ambitious, outcomes-based leadership to one of the world’s largest steelmaking regions.”
Adina Renee Adler, Executive Director at the GSCC, said that Yamato Kogyo’s submission and GSCC certification were independently verified by the Japan Management Association Sustainability Centre, one of the GSCC-approved certification bodies.
Founded in 1944, Yamato Kogyo is a Japanese steel manufacturer based in Japan and specializing in electric arc furnace steel production using recycled steel scrap. The company has expanded its presence globally into the United States, Korea and South East Asia.
Using 2024 as its base year, Yamato Kogyo reported a CASEI of 0.88 tonnes CO₂e per metric ton of hot-rolled steel. From that baseline, the company has set an interim SBET of 0.83 tonnes CO₂e by 2030 and a long-term goal of just 0.12 tonnes CO₂e by 2050, a target that exceeds the GSCC Steel Climate Standard's objective. Both interim and long-term targets comply with the GSCC Steel Climate Standard, with the 2050 goal exceeding the Standard’s objective, underscoring Yamato Kogyo’s commitment to leading the industry toward deep decarbonization.

Adopted in August 2023, the GSCC Steel Climate Standard is a global benchmark for measuring and reporting steel carbon emissions. It provides a science-based framework for members to obtain third-party certification of facility-specific emissions intensity and to conduct annual self audits to demonstrate ongoing decarbonization progress and to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. The Steel Climate Standard supports the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
