Construction has started at SSAB’s new mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden.

The 2.5-Mtpy mill will incorporate Danieli’s QSP-DUE thin slab casting and rolling technology, allowing for the production of strips from 1.3mm to 25.4mm in thickness, with coil weights up to 40t.

Johnny Sjöström, SSAB CEO, stated: "We are building the world's most electrified steel mill, combining cutting-edge technology in a unique way. This investment enhances both our competitiveness and our commitment to the climate.

“With the new technology, we will achieve lower costs, shorter lead times, and better adaptability to demand fluctuations. Once we close our current production, we will significantly reduce our carbon dioxide emissions in Luleå."

A groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, alongside Sjöström.

Upon completion, the plant will be one of the most electrified and sustainable steel production sites globally, contributing a 7% reduction in Sweden’s total carbon emissions.

Giacomo Mareschi Danieli, Danieli CEO, added: “This project showcases Italian technological innovation's ability to generate tangible environmental, economic, and social benefits, leading the global transition towards a decarbonised and competitive steel industry.”
